WHERE DID THE 5K A DAY CHALLENGE COME FROM?

"In May 2019 I agreed, with some friends, to complete a half marathon in May 2020. I was training and had reached the point of being able to run (jog!!) just over nine miles and the 13.1 mile distance was beginning to look achievable. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the event was cancelled and instead of taking the sensible approach and maintaining fitness levels my approach was to just stop training. The half marathon has been rearranged now for November and the realisation hit that training needed to restart - something a lot easier said than done. So, to motivate me to get back to the training I asked the staff at KPS who would like to join me in completing a 5K A Day Challenge for a period of 28 days. The challenge could be completed by walking, jogging or running (not driving!) 5K a day. Happily, 15 other members of staff agreed to join me in this challenge for a variety of their own reasons which can be read below.

Today (13.5.2020) is Day 10 of the challenge and it has been suggested to us that we used this 'event' to try and raise some much needed funds for Barnsley Hospice. This was agreed to without a moments hesitation as it is a cause that is very close to our hearts and the hearts of those in our community. We are all aware that many charities have been struggling during this time and we wanted to do what we could to help.

If you can spare anything to support this charity we would be extremely grateful. If not, we would be just as grateful for a cheer or a wave if you see us out and about whilst we are completing our daily 5Ks.

Thank you." Jane MacKay

"I agreed to this challenge because I am super competitive and I would like to try and reach a time as quick as Mrs Ellis!"    Mrs Smith

"I am doing this to challenge myself to get my bottom off the sofa and get a little fitter. (I am not attempting to beat Mrs Ellis!)"   Mrs Frostick

"I'm doing the challenge to get a bit fitter and to see some of the countryside that we live in ."    Mrs Hallas

"I wanted to do this to become fitter and hopefully work towards being able to run the whole 5K."   Miss Ashton

"I am doing this to challenge myself."    Miss Shillito

"I wanted to do this because I've never been any good at running. I've always been a bit of a gym lover but struggled when it comes to running so I wanted to challenge myself whilst the gyms are closed."  Miss Thorpe

"I'm doing this to hopefully become more of a runner instead of just thinking about it!"    Miss Warburton

"I am doing this challenge to get a bit fitter and hopefully to lose a bit of weight."    Mrs Kane

"I'm doing it so that I can go back to eating cake rather than turning into a doughnut."   Mrs Cookson

"I'm doing it because when we went into lockdown our daily family walks were a real highlight and I enjoyed walking the familiar streets as well as exploring lanes and woodlands that I had never visited before. That was all about my mental health but now the challenge has forced me to focus upon my physical health by speeding up the pace and thereby slowing the expansion of my waistline - hopefully."   Mrs Clay

"I'm taking part because I used to love running and went five days a week up until becoming pregnant. I NEEDED to get back to it and this challenge is just the motivation I needed."    Miss Smith
