At the end of September I will be joining a group of mums to trek Berber-style in the High Atlas Mountains   in the aid of raising money for "Get-A-Head" charity. The trek will last 6 days and involves navigating some of North Africa's toughest terrain culminating in reaching North Africa's highest peak Mt. Toubkal (4167m) We will be trekking for around 6-7 hours per day with upto 10-12 hours on the last day!

This is the hardest challenge I have ever set myself.  Not only that, but there's not a 5 star hotel in sight; sleeping bags all the way - the last time I slept in a one of those I must of been 6 years old!

We are aiming to raise money  specifically to fund a junior doctor/PhD medical student to do a 3 year research programme into the extremely rare condition Familial Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma. There is no treatment for this cancer once it is diagnosed, apart from surgically removing tumours as they develop.  Therefore, life expectancy is short.  The disease attacks children and adults and can be there at birth.

Unless we can understand how a disease works at its most basic level, it is difficult to develop new treatments hence the vital need for continuing research.

The whole group is looking to raise £40,000 with each individual needing to raise £1,500.
