The Charlie Chong Farm was one of Torontos earliest and most important producers of Chinese vegetables. It operated from 1920 to 1966 at the northeast corner of Eglinton Ave. W. and Jane St., in what is now the Eglinton Flats of the Mount Dennis neighbourhood.
Founded and run by Charlie and Henry Chong, both originally from Guangdong province, China, the farm was also a friendly gathering place for the citys burgeoning Chinese community.
Despite many challenges - the Chinese Head Tax, language barriers, prejudice, no social support, and the hardship of establishing a new life in a new city - the two persevered: they hired several new Canadians (including non-Chinese immigrants), provided food for countless people, and served as a pioneer of Chinese entrepreneurship.
