LAD. A word we’re all familiar with. Being one of the lads brings to mind a group of fun-loving, cheeky chappies larking around in search of the good life, to raise a smile and tickle our fancies.
So what does this word have to do with prostate cancer, the most common cause of cancer death in UK men? We’ll tell you.
LAD is a Bristol-based fundraising initiative. Set up in 2005 by a group of local lads working together at Kingswood Leisure Centre, the LAD mission is to raise as much money as possible for the Prostate Cancer Charity. How? By producing an annual calendar in which the lads pose naked in places that provoke a “how on earth did you do that?” reaction. From Cabot’s Tower and Brunel’s spectacular Clifton Suspension Bridge, to the SS Great Britain and a local female hair salon. These lads know no boundaries. Unfortunately, neither does cancer.
Not only do the lads raise funds, they also raise awareness of how important it is for other lads of all ages to look after their precious tools. LAD is about raising money, raising awareness, and raising a smile at the same time.
We all have something in common: we Live And Die. Fact. LAD takes the heavy-going subject of cancer, keeps it close to the heart of its mission and turns it into a positive reminder that life is too short. Every hour, 1 man dies from prostate cancer.
