Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I will be running in the London Marathon 2017 and taking on the Reading Triathlon 2017 to raise funds and awareness for Sarcoma UK.
Sarcoma UK is the only charity in the UK to raise awareness and fund research into this rare form of soft tissue and bone cancer.
Sarcoma UK are aiming to raise £3million for research into Sarcoma cancer by 2020, with the aim of finding effective treatment for the disease within the next 10 years. Let's raise some money to help them on their journey!!
As you may know my mum Mary has suffered from this rare form of cancer twice now. She was initially diagnosed with soft tissue Sarcoma in her thigh in December 2007. She underwent surgery to remove the tumour and subsequently also lost three of her quad muscles. The surgery was followed by an intensive 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy.
Unfortunately, in December 2014, almost 7 years to the day of the first diagnosis, she was told that the Sarcoma had returned, this time to just below her hip. She again had surgery to remove the cancer and surrounding tissue. This was also followed by 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy.
Thankfully mum is currently cancer free however she still requires regular check ups and scans. She has limited mobility and is in constant pain in her leg, hip and back due to having only one quad muscle left. Despite all this, if she could she would be running marathons to raise funds for Sarcoma UK!
Sarcoma is often misdiagnosed, as it was in my mum's case. Sarcoma UK are working to provide training and education for GP's to help them recognise the symptoms of Sarcoma. A third of people with Sarcoma visit their GP at least 3 times over a period of 18 months before being referred to a specialist. The majority of GP's have never seen and will never see a case of this rare cancer in their working lives.
