We raise awareness of organ donation to encourage people to sign the register

Story

Liana passed away on Saturday 7 Feb 2015 after complications with her kidney transplant.  Before this she had an opportunity to live life without dialysis because of a kidney donation.  She would really want us to continue her efforts to raise money for charities linked with organ donation to help raise awareness and give others the chance she had.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Liana Tolland:

“Check in: 7 June1992; Check Out: 7 Feb 2015”

Liana went to Africa in 2010 to teach English & Drama.  Six weeks into her gap year she reacted to her anti-malarial tablets and had multi-organ failure. Her battle began and she spent the next 18 months living in hospitals in Kenya, Dorchester, London,Bristol and Yeovil. Her strength and courage took her through devastating ill health and operations on her pancreas, bowel and liver. During this time, due to kidney failure, Liana also received dialysis 3 times a week. She hated diaysis and it made her really sick :(

During her fight she had the honour of carrying the Olympic torch in recognition of her courage in this battle and she went on to be nominated for the Western Gazette Braveheart Heroes Award for the work she did with charity. We recently accepted The Wessex FM Legacy Award 2015 in her name.

Liana was a staunch supporter of organ donation and an advocate of the charity Live Life Give Life with whom she worked to raise awareness of organ donation; her ultimate goal was to save lives.  She was recently interviewed by the Sunday Times and Radio 5 Live and showed a huge knowledge and passion for this work, where she really wanted to help make a difference.

Liana was given a second chance at life on 28thJanuary 2014 when she received her own kidney transplant. After this during 2014 she travelled, and lived life to the full whilst never forgetting her generous donor.

In October 2014, after a period of acute kidney rejection Liana underwent more treatment to save her kidney transplant and this was successful. Complications of that treatment meant that Liana had no immune system and sadly she contracted a virus and had a rare resistance to the medication that prevented treatment of this virus.  In January Liana was taken to intensive care at Southmead Hospital and placed on life support to allow her body to rest and heal whilst she was treated with a more aggressive drug. Liana was resistant to this medication also and her battle ended peacefully on Saturday 7th February, at 2.06pm, whilst surrounded by her closest family.

Liana’s name will live on throughorgan donation awareness and the work she did for 'Life Life Give Life'... We will make sure of it x
