The 21 April 2013 is going to be the date of one of my greatest achievements as I hope by the end of it to have successfully completed the Virgin London Marathon. As you will know behind every challenge is a good cause and I intend to raise money for a charity which is has significant personal meaning to me.
I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2001 and after a lengthy struggle and surgical intervention in April 2010 my condition is now under control.
So why a marathon?? Well, I am hoping not to sound too dramatic when I describe the surgical intervention as life changing, but it really has been. From my lowest point having collapsed in Court to now being in remission for three years. As a result, I made a list of things that I wanted to do which I hadn’t been able to do before. I added running a 10 k to list and joined the Absolute Beginners Group at Horsforth Harriers in April 2011 and ran the Jane Tomlinson 10k in July 2011.
After this I had well and truly caught the running bug and in between significant periods of injury I have qualified as a Running Group leader and co-lead a group at the Horsforth Harriers and I ran my first half marathon when I completed the Great North Run in September 2012, a 26.2 miles seems a natural progression and if not just madness!
I will be running for the National Association of Crohn’s and Colitis and I hope that I will far exceed my £2, 500 target and the monies I do raise will hopefully play a part in helping other sufferers who are not as fortunate as I to manage their disease so they can one day to achieve their goals and maybe one day find a cure for an incurable disease.
I am in the process of setting up a series of events to assist with reaching my fundraising target so please watch this space.
Thank you in advance for your support.
