Story
The Inspiration
My name is Brendon Turner and I was truly touched and inspired by the work that Compton Hospice did on behalf of my family. I wanted to organise an event that represented a real challenge like the one Compton staff and cancer patients face on a daily basis. I have been overwhelmed by the support I have from the people around me who are keen to help our local charity.
I didn't want to talk about a Hospice when my Dad became Ill. In my mind it meant we had to face the reality of losing him to liver cancer. The lessons I learnt throughout that period have helped me to develop a different outlook on life. Throughout my Dads 6 month battle his strength and the strength of my family and friends was my inspiration to face the challenge of each day as we saw him grow weaker. It was quite ironic that my Dad had always spoke of looking after the people, the working classes and these people, his people, who would be the ones to see him through his final fight. No wage or salary would have been enough to repay the love and affection the nurses from Compton and his beloved NHS displayed in his last days in this world. It is only in these testing times in life that we realise the value of our skilled and hardworking doctors, nurses and medical professionals.
The Charity: Compton Hospice
When the inevitable happened we couldn't have wished for a more caring, conscientious and experienced team of professionals to look after my dad in his time of need.
Day and night they were there to provide support, not only for my dad but all of the family. I will forever be indebted to the staff at Compton who helped my dad spend his last weeks with the least amount of suffering and anxiety. Nothing can prepare you for the death of a parent death but it is reassuring to see the attention and care of the nurses and be educated and informed throughout the end of life plan. The Big Challenge 2014 was a huge success and we are back in 2016 with a bigger and tougher task and a stronger team of committed great friends and supporters. The Challenge itself starts with a Cycle 20 miles from Anglesea through pen-y-pass, ascending off road carrying bikes for a 7 mile mountain hike/run/trek. Then we are back on the bikes for 25 miles to Lake Bala for 800m open water swim. Concluding with 88 mile cycle back to Wolverhampton and Compton.
The Target
We have set a goal to raise a minimum of £15000 to beat our previous £13200 in 2014 and to help Compton Hospice and its staff to help more people cope better in life and ease the passing of those who are terminally ill.
