This will be the biggest challenge I have ever faced. My aim is to complete five marathons in five days! I will be taking part in The Forces March 2015 — a 139-mile ‘super challenge’ to raise money for The Veterans Charity.
The Forces March is one of the UK’s toughest challenge events, which was created to unite civilians with personnel from the military and emergency services to raise vital funds for the care and support of UK armed forces heroes and forces families.
I have completed a marathon before when I took on the challenge of The London Marathon in 2012 but havent done anything since then. I will be walking the equivalent of five marathons in five consecutive days, following the route taken by men of the newly formed 6th Airborne Division on a now legendary training march from Devon to Wiltshire in 1942.
I come from a military background, my Grandfather, father, mother, brother and numerous Uncles, Aunts and cousins are all ex forces. I myself am an ex servicewoman, serving in the WRAC (Womens Royal Army Corps) from 1975- 78. This is my way of giving something back to a charity that helps all ex servicemen and women.
I had personal experience of the help given by The Veterans Charity when they provided my mother with a rise and recline chair following a fall she had in 2013. My mother (being ex WRAC also) recieved help and support within 48hrs of my contacting them. They were simply amazing.
The challenge starts on May 20 from Ilfracombe, and I will cover an average of 27.8 miles a day, walking through Exford, Crowcombe, Langport and Maiden Bradley and finishing in Bulford, Wiltshire on Sunday, May 24.
I have already started my training and will steadily progress throughout the coming year, so come hail, rain or shine I will be out there clocking up the miles, fitting the training in with my shift work.
I hope to raise at least £1000 from my challenge for the Veterans Charity.
