Story

Hello and welcome to the  Hiking The Viking Way sponsorship page of Ian sharp  Louise Udall-Waring

The Viking Way

It was made to follow the old Viking trade routes, the only trouble is that it's 147 miles long!!

This explains what the Viking Way is all about and where it goes.

July 2010   Part 1

We started the walk in July 2010, after three days we had managed 84 ½ miles, from Barton upon Humber to Lincoln, in blistering heat. Louise’s badly infected blisters and swollen feet meant that we ended up having to stop, she ended up on double antibiotics thanks to Lincoln A&E but couldn’t walk.  We need to do it to the end, we said we’d do it and we won’t be beaten.

Easter 2011 Part 2

The walk continues from Lincoln  over three days, Good Friday to Easter Sunday, in yet more heat!

Many thanks to the owners of the Beeches campsite Byard's leap, for their generosity, much appreciated.

We still have a mission, to walk 62 ½ miles so we can put our feet up and enjoy our Easter eggs, guilt free!

Please donate, we’d love our great personal efforts to hit our target £1000, not so far to go now!

Ian's story

I'm doing the walk for Malcolm, my wife Karen's dad and daughter Heather's granddad. We've been walking most weekends for the last few years, since I bought a book called “The Inn Way Series”.

Not long ago, I walked from Whitby to Scarborough, 20+ miles, then did it again two days later with my daughter, Heather. People said that next time I should do it for charity, so this year, I was planning to do it, as my father in law, Malcolm, died this year of prostate cancer, which he had been fighting for going on 10 years.

When I lost my dad at the age of 12, I lost all the dad stuff, but when I met Malc, it was just like getting my dad back but 20 years after. He could mend anything, did all my cars and motorbikes, jobs in the house and along the way he taught me a lot. I miss him every day, the times I go to ring him to give me a hand with a job in the house are unreal, so I'm doing this walk for him and all the boys that lost their dads. If my few blisters and hurting feet can stop others feeling like I felt on the day he died 3/3/2010 then it will be worth every blister.

Thanks to my brother in law, who provided the t shirts and signs/ cards  for the walk. http://www.afinesigncompany.co.uk/

Louise's story

The reason I do it.

I started in 2008 with a Race for Life walk/jog, an easy 5km. I actually raised over £700, more was added as the page closed, not bad for a first effort! My dad  had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, my aunt had been treated for cancer and friends had either, by luck of the draw, survived or died due to cancer. I felt that I had to do my bit to help Cancer Research Uk fight this awful thing, taker of memories and people. Anyway, it may just be a matter of time before it gets me too. Fingers crossed I'm a lucky one but not everyone is so lucky, so if my efforts buy vital supplies, give researchers time to do their research and equipment  to do it with, that's a good thing.

Update 2011

Although my dad, John Udall was beating prostate cancer, his body was invaded yet again and he sadly died on January 5th this year. This makes my walking, even more poignant as the final leg will be walked on April 23rd, what would have been his 69th birthday

It doesn't seem five minutes since I walked The Hadrian's Wall Path for Cancer Research UK in July 2009. I walked all 84 miles of it from Bowness on Solway to the Roman Fort at Segedunum in Wallsend. It took 40 hours and 42 minutes and I took over 800 photos, although the whole journey is etched in my mind forever. If you've not done it, add it to your list of things to do, well worth it!

After banging my toes on, what seemed every Roman rock and trudging up hill and down crag with a heavy rucksack, being charged by a cow, losing 2 toe nails and getting 7 blisters wearing my walking boots, I managed to make a staggering £492.44p in total.

It fell short of my £1000 target but since I've raised around £1200 in total by walking Hadrian's Wall and doing a mere 5 KM Race for Life event in Derby in 2008. I'm really happy and grateful for all supporters who donated, as every penny counts in the fight against Cancer.
