In November 2013 Eva Gilligan then 18 months old was diagnosed with a Wilm’s tumour. A Wilms' tumour is a type of kidney cancer. It's thought to come from very specialised cells in the embryo known as metanephric blastema. These cells are involved in the development of the child's kidneys while they're in the womb. The cells usually disappear at birth, but in many children with Wilms' tumour, cells called nephrogenic rests can still be found. There are only around 80 cases diagnosed each year in the UK.
In January of this year Tilly Coventry 2 years 8 months old was diagnosed with Leukemia after only a few days of not feeling quite right, spiking temperature and a bit grisly, nothing extremely different to the normal temperature/bugs that most children of that age suffer with. As this had gone on for just over a week with no improvement Tilly’s parents arranged an appointment at the doctors and Tilly’s mummy Sarah made a point of stressing that Tilly didn’t appear to have any colour in her skin. After much discussion about that along with her other symptoms the doctor sent them immediately for blood tests that day. That evening Tilly was sadly diagnosed.
In June 2014 Eva sadly replased and is now on a high dose of chemotherapy and awaits and a stem cell transplant. Tilly is doing well and continues her treatment. Momentum have been a great support to both families as well as family and friends who have rallied round to offer support or a shoulder to cry on.
