I have decided to run a minimum of four half marathons this year; with the first two in the next couple of months - the Brighton Half on 21st Feb and the Hasting Half on 21st March.
I am running to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), the umbrella organisation for 13 humantiarian aid agencies in the UK. At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.
We've all seen the devastating images in the aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti in the first two weeks of the New Year. The scale of the humanitarian disaster is enormous, people are without shelter, clean water, food and basic medical supplies. Thousands of children have been left orphans, women are giving birth in the street because they can't make it to hospital or when they get there, there isn't enough medical support, hundreds of bodies are still buried under the rubble of ruined buildings because friends and families cannot dig them out for a proper burial and people are getting desparate.
The DES is coordinating the UK's aid effort and I would love my friends and family to support this essential humanitarian effort.
