We challenge conventional thinking to help solve the grand issues of our time

Story

I will be abseiling down the Spinnaker Tower in Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth on Friday 18 April – Good Friday,  to raise funds for The University of Sussex Formula Student Team,  Mobil 1 Team Sussex http://www.sussex.ac.uk/teamsussex/.  This group of young and talented engineering students are currently building their car for the 2014 Institute of Mechanical Engineers Formula Student Race in July.

The energy  and  enthusiasm these students have shown and their determination  to improve on the second national place that they earned in the Endurance Race in 2013  is typical of the students you find at Sussex.

I am being assisted in my preparation for my abseil by the University of Sussex Royal Naval Unit, whose activities I also support – my grateful thanks goes out to them for their time and patience in calming a rather terrified Lead Event Co-Ordinator.  My choice of venue for my abseil seemed appropriate given that it will be down the side of one of the most iconic examples of architectural engineering on the South Coast. The Spinnaker Tower is two-and-a-half times as high as Nelson’s Column and stands in sight of HMS Victory, the flagship of Lord Nelson, one of my childhood heroes .  I am told that I will have a view of 23 miles if it is a clear day (and assuming that I am going to have my eyes open as I descend).

I hope that you will consider my abseil worthy of your sponsorship. Please feel free to pass on to any colleagues who may possibly have a few coins rattling around in their pockets amid the lint and Werther’s Originals.

With very best regards
Lynda

Sussex has challenged convention since our foundation in 1961. From modernist architecture on the edge of a rural national park, to our progressive academics and inspiring students, to the very tone of our conversations, our expressions of radicalism and critical thinking. We dare to be different.
