Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for Team Trailtrikers.
My wife hopes to be the first person in the UK to complete the Oxfam Trail Walk in a wheelchair in July.
My wife is due to have a stem cell transplant in May 2016, and for those that know her, you'll know that she has something called POEMS Syndrome, which is an incredibly rare disease affecting the blood, which in turn creates all sorts of problems within the body, in her case it's mainly polyneuropathy, which in 2014 put her in a wheelchair.
After finally being diagnosed in January 2015 with a malignant plasmacytoma, and then finding out she has POEMS syndrome, she spent three months in hospital in central London having radiotherapy and low-dose chemotherapy, followed by three months at a neuro rehabilitation centre. There is a chance that she could develop Myeloma in the future, and so it has been decided that she will have a stem cell transplant which should hopefully prevent this, and with any luck enable the symptoms of poems to reduce or disappear.
The dream come true would be following the stem cell transplant my wife is able walk again!
Towards the end of last year our good friend Andy Blair suggested to me to join him and a few others in the Oxfam Trail Walk, 100km in 30 hours taking in the South Downs from Petersfield to Brighton. My wife and I would normally do something like this together, as we are quite competitive and love being challenged. So in our unique style I suggested that my wife take part as well, in a wheelchair!
This would normally be a hard enough challenge to an average healthy person, so you can imagine why my wife is my hero and why I will be pushing, pulling, lifting and supporting her through this amazing challenge!
The team are all amazing as well and everyone has said yes to helping my wife achieve this goal, even though it would make their treck so much more difficult.
I am so grateful to our team for their support which has also given my beautiful wife something to focus on!
Our team need to raise a minimum of £3000 as a team in order to take part and raise vital funds for Oxfam. Please, if you can donate that would be much appreciated. You will also be able to keep up-to-date with her treatment, as we will be using this opportunity as a way to promote POEMS Syndrome as well as show people what going through chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant is really like. So many people are scared before something like this, and this is a great way to show people what it will really be like. Look out for her blogs and videos on YouTube.
As the stem cell transplant will make her lose all her hair, my wife will be shaving her hair off, and donating it to the Princess Trust, which make wigs for children. We will also be documenting this and there will be a video, hopefully funny and not sad which we will upload to our YouTube channel. You can keep up-to-date with all of this on our Trailtrikers website, which Andy has done an amazing job of setting up.
