Story
In January 2004at the age of 57 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and told I had just 2 years to live. Since then I have been fortunate to have received a series of treatments at University College Hospital London and now almost 7 years later the battle continues but I am still here to tell the tale.
The care and support I received from my Oncology Consultant and staff at the hospital has been incredible but I would not be here without some of the innovative and pioneering treatments made available to me. None of that would have been possible without long, difficult and costly scientific research into Prostate Cancer.
The benefits from prostate cancer research can be seen in better treatments and improved quality of life for those suffering from this disease and it will only be through prostate cancer research that a cure will eventually be found. For that reason I now dedicate much of my time to help raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre in London. Each year I organise and manage the Snowdon 500 Challenge ( www.snowdon500.co.uk ) which has raised more than £500,000 over the past 3 years.
On 6th October 2010 I fly out to Nepal with my son Gareth to undertake the arduous and challenging trek to Everest Base Camp (5200mtrs) and to climb Kala Patar (5600mtrs / 18500ft). The trek involves a somewhat scary flight from Kathmandu to the tiny airstrip at Lukla followed by 14 days of point to point trekking that will take us through Namche Bazaar and Thyangboche and on to the Khumbu Glacier which leads to Base Camp and the Khumbu Ice Fall.
At the age of 64, completing this high altitude trek will not be easy but hopefully the training and preparation I have done over the past 3 or 4 months will be enough to get me there and back. It's also an opportunity to raise further funds for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre so please support this cause and sponsor me by making an on-line donation.
Donating through Just Giving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Just Giving - they will never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Gareth and I are meeting the full cost of this expedition from our own resources so all donations made will go to prostate cancer research. So please donate now - Thank You
