On April 25
th, 2010, I ran my second London Marathon in support of Cancer Research UK, the leading UK charity dedicated to cancer
research.
I finished the race in 3h24', a nice improvement on my previous 3h48 PB from last year.
I enjoyed the race thoroughly until Canary Wharf, keeping a 3h15 pace, but then I got hit by cramps and had to stop many times to stretch.
I have now gone well past the £5,000 target, and would like to thank all of you for supporting this cause that is so dear to me.
Next year I will not ask for money, I promise! :)
Cancer, unlike Alzheimer’s for which
I ran last year, does not need introductions.
We have all had our share of family members or friends affected, and an
adult in three will be hit in the course of a lifetime, so research is vital to
maximise our chances of spending our pension fund.
Sadly, cancer has touched my family from every angle,
but happily, thanks to the efforts supported by charities like Cancer Research
UK, there is also good news.
I will be running in celebration:
in March 2010 my dad Luciano will turn 75, a milestone we feared he would not
reach when he was diagnosed with larynx cancer in 2005. One of his vocal chords was lasered away, but at least he is still with
us and talks just fine. My birthday gift is a trip to London
on marathon day, together with my mum, for what I hope it will be a nice family
celebration.
I will be running in hope: my
uncle Pino was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2009. He has
undergone chemotherapy in the past year, and we are hoping in a miracle, as
pancreatic cancer is one of the toughest.
I will be running to remember: cancer
took the life of my grandfather Antonio in 1982, when I was still a kid, and in
1999 my dear uncle Bruno fell to lung cancer, both after many painful months of
chemo and radio therapy.
I will put in all the hard work for training and
running the London Marathon; I would be really grateful if you could give me a
contribution, however small, to help me reach my target.
Donating here is by far the easiest way, as you donate by
credit cards and the charity gets the money directly. It is also very safe, with SSL
encryption.
UK taxpayers also note that this donation can be claimed on your yearly
tax return to reduce your total taxable income.
For those of you into marathons,
my target time this year is 3h30 (last year I crossed the line at 3h48).
Many thanks in advance,
Max Cenni
