Story
The lung cancer teams from Wythenshawe and Christie Hospitals were awarded the prestigious ‘Oncology Team of the Year’ in the ‘Excellence in Oncology Awards 2008’ in association with Pfizer Limited. The team was also awarded a Special Commendation for ‘rapid access lung cancer services’ by the British Thoracic Society.
Early identification of lung cancer is key. Patients attending the chest clinic can receive same day CT scanning and bronchoscopy, resulting in rapid detection, diagnosis and treatment. The North West Lung Centre pioneered the use of endoscopic techniques to detect early signs of cancer such as fluorescence bronchosopy, where laser light is used to detect pre-cancer tissue. They have also developed a number of minimally invasive treatment techniques given within the airway using a bronchoscope, these include endobronchial radiation (brachytherapy), photodynamic therapy (another laser technique), and stenting (the placing of prosthetic tubes within the bronchial airway to relieve obstruction).
