We fund research into SMA to help find a cure and treatments

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have set up this page purely to raise money for the SMA Trust charity. My partner's daughter has recently been diagnosed with SMA type 2 and we were all deeply devastated learning about this disease. SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) is diagnosed as 1 of 3 types in children. Type 3 is the mildest form of SMA, type 2 causes respiratory problems and shortens life expectancy and type 1 is the most severe case. Most children who are diagnosed as type 1 do not live much longer than 2 years.  This disease (in basic terms) causes children's muscles to deteriorate rather than strengthen. This occurs all throughout the body which means children like Emelia will be in a wheelchair and need assisting doing most things all throughout her life.

There is medication for children with type 2 SMA that helps them to live just as long as a healthy person but there is no cure yet. I just ask that anybody could donate even 50 pence to this charity to support them in finding a cure.

I will be organising many other events (big & small) to raise money for this charity myself.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA
