Story
''your mental health is everything — prioritize it. Make the time like your life depends on it, because it does.” “If we start being honest about our pain, our anger, and our shortcomings instead of pretending they don't exist, then maybe we'll leave the world a better place than we found it.”
I have decided to take on the London Landmarks Half Marathon to support and raise awareness for those suffering with their mental health and those who feel the world is better off without them in it. This charity do amazing work day in and day out to ensure that there is always someone to listen to a person in need. Samaritans respond to around 70,000 requests for help each year via phone calls, email, in person and webchat.
Facts from the Samaritan website for England 2022 -
- 5284 suicides were registered in 2022*. This is 65 more than in 2021.
- The overall suicide rate was 10.5 per 100,000**, which is the same as the previous year.
- The male suicide rate was 16.1 per 100,000**, compared to a female suicide rate of 5.3 per 100,000**.
- Males aged 50-54 were found to have the highest suicide rate (23.1 per 100,000)
If I can do anything, it is just to attempt to encourage conversations about mental health and try to ease the stigma around it. If we can continue to open up the conversations about mental health, you could change or save someones life, giving them the strength to carry on. I know first hand what it is like to experience loss due to mental health and have also as a result, due to grief, suffered with my own mental health. I have found positive and encouraging ways to better my own mental health and would love to support a charity that is working everyday to do the same. Together we can make a difference.
