Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
(see bottom for remaining links of the video diary of the walk)
The recent flooding in Pakistan has been the most devastating in living memory. A death toll of 1,700 and rising and expected to cross 3,000 soon. More than 20 million people (and rising) have been affected and left homeless and without livelihoods, of which more than 4 million are children; these are numbers greater than the Asian tsunami, the Haiti earthquake and the 2005/06 earthquakes in Kashmir and this number is expected to continue rising.
In addition, there is a huge risk of water-borne diseases such as dysentery and cholera.
The DEC - an umbrella organisation of 13 UK humanitarian aid agencies - said its aid had managed to reach 300,000 survivors, with many UK charities distributing food, water purification tablets, shelter, medicine and hygiene kits by raft, boat and donkey.
But it said it "urgently" needed the UK public's help to save more lives.
Chief executive Brendan Gormley said: "These devastating floods have left millions fighting to survive with little food, clean water or shelter.
"As monsoon rains continue unabated, it is clear that the situation is deteriorating and the speed of our response is vital." (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-10883524)
As a result, I will be walking from Bristol to Bath (about 20 miles from my flat) this Sunday 8th August 2010 to try and raise as much as possible for the DEC. So, please try and donate generously and make an impact to counter this natural disaster.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Many Thanks!
Omar
