My story
Oxjam Stoke Newington Takeover is a community project which has been set up in order to raise money for Oxfam. It is the Hackney-based branch of the nationwide music project, Oxjam Music Festival – and it is currently developing as an extremely exciting project. Oxjam Music Festival has several levels, and numerous branches across the UK. There are high-profile artist-focused events, secret celebrity fundraisers, one-off events and Takeover projects. Takeovers are community festivals, which serve to promote, celebrate and showcase aspects of the local community, alongside local and emerging talent, whilst raising funds for Oxfam. The climax of our Takeover is a multi-venue music event taking place at venues in Stoke Newington and Dalston on October 22nd 2011. We are also holding a series of fundraising events across the summer, taking place in local venues and in collaboration with existing events such as Hackney Wick Festival. The entire project is built around the notion of celebrating Hackney as an exciting and culturally diverse centre. We are engaging and promoting local businesses through the project, plus the majority of the artists and volunteers taking part in the events are residents of the borough. We intend to provide events for audiences from all walks of life, and to give back to every element of the community whilst raising money for the poverty-stricken within the UK and abroad. So, spread the word and get involved.
