Story

Myself and two friends (James McLean & Nicholas Cassin) will be climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) on a 6 day trek beginning on July 15th hoping to raise money for Xavier Project.

What is Xavier Project? (www.xavierproject.org)

Xavier Project exists to provide opportunities to urban refugees in Kenya and Uganda who otherwise might not have the means to live fulfilled and dignified lives. In a holistic approach to development, Xavier Project arms urban refugees with the tools needed to to take back control of their lives and make a positive change to their communities through a comprehensive education program.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

According to the UNHCR there are over 60,000 refugees living in Nairobi. They do not have access to basic services such as education and healthcare. Most are financially vulnerable as they are unable to gain work permits. As a result, 67% of refugee children cannot afford to attend secondary school. In line with this we aim to promote better access to education to help them take back control of their lives and make a positive change, whether in their new community or in their country of origin.

How will this project solve this problem?

Xavier Project sponsors refugee children to study at government boarding schools. These offer the most conducive learning environment as many children's families cannot afford to pay for food or electricity at home. During the holidays extra-curricular activities are organized to supplement their formal education. This includes sports activities and music coaching, as well as community service and social media courses. Language classes are also held for those who don't speak English or Swahili.

Potential Long Term Impact

Xavier Project benefits some of Nairobi's poorest and most vulnerable families, educating refugee children and business owners to help lift their families out of the cycle of poverty. The money raised will pay for as many as 25 refugees or more to go to secondary school, allowing them a safe environment to learn and leading to opportunities for employment and a secure future. It will also provide training for refugee business owners and computers for the educational lab.
