Story

Pictures here http://www.asiphoto.net/ race number 1081.  Briefly this is how the race went.  Good swim albeit a bit long as I could hardly see most of the buoys so reckon I probably did nearer 3 miles than 2.4 finishing in 1 hour 12 minutes so I was on the bike by 7.20am.  A good bike speed of over 17 miles an hour as expected would have left me with around 4 hours 15 minutes for the run to hit my dream time of 12 hours but good bike speed was not to be.  In short, a broken speedo, 2 slow punctures and back pain (all 4 of which have not happened in 2000 miles of training!) meant that the bike leg took 7 hours 7 mins, a bit longer than expected.  After a brief John Cleese moment of cursing at the inanimate object which was my bike (we used to get along so well) I decided that stuff happens and just to go for my secondary goal of a 13 hour finish which would mean a 4hour 25min marathon.  The run went really well, the crowds and the volunteers were fantastic really spurring me on.  I was a little confused when complete strangers were shouting out Come on Dave, I didn't have my name written on me then realised they had looked up my number in the programme, a really nice touch.  I was trying to figure out how far I'd gone and spent about 20 minutes trying to do 26 minus 11 in my head.  This gave me an indication that I was a little jaded.  Mind and body went to new places especially from mile 15 until the end, still I plodded on Forest Gump style and finished with a 4hour 10min marathon and a total time of 12 hours 46 mins 28 seconds. That last 200 yards over the finishing red carpet was magical.  My family and friends were there to cheer me on and share those magical words, Dave Carter, you are an Ironman.  A truly amazing day and a very proud achievement.  It's great to have so much support around and for people to be so generous raising all this money for great charities.  I am now taking a 20 year break from Ironman and will return to race with my son or daughter in a bid to jointly qualify for the World Championships.  Thank you to all of you, I wasn't alone in this race.
