As my Family and Close Friends know, my Dad 'Mr David King' was diagnosed with Mesothilioma in March '09.
This is an asbestos related cancer and affects more people yearly due to working with asbestos in the early stages of their lifve's. In fact each year 2,000-3,000 cases are diagnosed, similar to various other conditions. This often leads to a misdiagnosis of the disease. In addition, when an accurate diagnosis is finally made, mesothelioma has typically already progressed to a more advanced stage. Mesothelioma is most often caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In fact, 70% to 80% of mesothelioma cases are caused by this type of exposure. In most cases, the infected person was either directly or indirectly exposed to asbestos and it may have happened when they worked in a factory or lived in an environment where the chemical was present. Commonly, the affected person was unaware of the asbestos. For instance, an employer could have taken over a site that was previously used by another company to produce asbestos related materials. One could be exposed simply by washing the clothes of an employee who worked there and was directly exposed to it.
I am cut up, upset and overwhelmed by my dad's illness. He is the person who has taught me to be the person I am today. Teaching me respect and also his skills at an early age which have stood me in good stead for my career now. As a Son, I can't even consider what Mum is experiencing. As a Brother, Godfather, Boyfriend and Best Friend - you know who you are....... And those that aren't!
Even to those who don't know what the Charity is, please understand that it really can affect someone close to you and certainly has me. I never thought I would do a Charity event, but this is it - for Dad, Mum, Stephen and all those affected by Mesothelioma..........
It will be hot in August from London to Paris (290miles) and I only have a Chopper to ride on, I will be wearing the tightest lycra so PLEASE give generously, I know I am...............!
