About my Giving Hour

I am lucky enough to have won a place on the fourth plinth One and Other project in Trafalgar Square.
2,400 people each have one hour for 100 days, to do as they choose on the plinth.

During my hour I would like to raise awareness of 10 great charities I support.
My aim is to raise £100 each, so £1000 in total.

Why Children's High Level Group?

In 1999 I saw a news programme about children in orphanges in Eastern Europe.
I had seen news items before about the plight of these children, but the detail of this programme moved me to tears.
I wrote to the tv station thanking them for bringing this situation into the open but more so, to ask who was doing something to put this right. I received no reply.  Sadly I did not pursue my enquiry.

 I thought of those children often, hoping they were being cared for. Hoping they were no longer chained or in cage 'beds'. They were not allowed to run, play or just be how children are. In some cases children who were born healthy became disabled, their limbs withered from lack of use as they were not allowed to move from their beds. All children deserve love, care and a safe place that is home.
 In recent years I came across  Children's High Level Group  who are addressing some of the issues in institutions
in Eastern Europe. They are changing children's futures and giving them stability and care now.
They are getting the job done.

About Children's High Level Group.
Helping 1 million children across Europe still living in large residential institutions. Working in Eastern Europe namely Romania, Modova, Armenia, Georgia and the Czech Republic, CHLG aim to ensure a minimum standard for children
 is implemented across Europe.

Contrary to popular belief, only 4% of these children are orphans, and they are in care because their families are poor, disabled or from ethnic minorities.Many of these children have disabilities and handicaps, but often remain without any health or educational interventions. In some cases they do not receive basic services such as adequate food. Almost always they are without human or emotional contact and stimulation.
