We fight childhood liver disease to help every life affected

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We've been through a bit of a whirlwind since our little boy Hugo was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia in November. Biliary Atresia is a rare liver disease which affects the bile flow from the liver, resulting in liver damage. Hugo underwent an operation called the Kasai in early December, and we are on tenterhooks at the moment as to whether the operation has been successful or not. If not, he will need a liver transplant. Whichever the immediate outcome is, he will need a lifetime of care.

We were completely oblivious to the warning signs, and the potential severity of jaundice, until we were referred to our local hospital in November. His illness would most certainly have been picked up sooner if we had known (and there were several opportunities for our local healthcare professionals to raise concern, had they known more themselves), and he could have had a greater chance to keep his liver. Now we know more about jaundice and childhood liver diseases, we are a bit astounded that it is not more widely communicated. The CLDF are spearheading a campaign called Yellow Alert (http://www.yellowalert.org/) to highlight the signs of prolonged jaundice in babies and to educate both parents and healthcare professionals. It is just one of the many things the charity do in an effort to combat childhood liver disease and support those affected.

When we were in hospital for his operation and recovery, we decided we'd like to raise money for the CLDF to help raise awareness of childhood liver disease, and to help fund the research, information and support they provide in the UK.

So this page is set up to support our first ever fundraising event - Big Yellow Bingo. Most of the fundraising will be on the night itself, but following requests from friends who can't come on the night to make donations, we thought we'd set up this page too.
