Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Sunday 7th November I ran the New York marathon for Macmillan cancer support in a time of 4h 22mins. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget, and meeting the Macmillan team and hearing the stories of my fellow Macmillan runners has really opened my eyes to the work that Macmillan do and how much the money I raise will really help sufferers of cancer and their families. This has made me even more determined to raise as much money as I can for them.

It had always been an ambition of mine to run and complete a marathon and I  entered the London race in 2002. However just four weeks before the race a nasty skiing accident left me with a dislocated shoulder .. and with the other arm in plaster! Agonisingly, after all the months of hard work and training I wouldn't be able to fulfil my ambition just yet!

Then came along our lovely children Rosie and Calum and so my marathon plans were put on the backburner.

This year though Calum started school and I  (just about!) had the time and energy to fulfil my ambition.

I realised that completing the marathon would mean so much more to me if at the same time I could raise money for a cause with a special personal connection.

In 2006 my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully after extensive treatment he was given the all clear and is happily fully recovered. Like so many of us though, we have friends who have not been able to recover, and they have been helped and comforted through this terrible disease by Macmillan Cancer Support.

I therefore decided to run in support of Macmillan a charity that devotes itself to improving the lives of people affected by cancer in many ways. For example £20 will pay for 42 copies of The cancer guide. This Macmillan booklet can help someone recently diagnosed with cancer and their families to understand cancer, its treatment and the help available. £1910 could pay for 10 Macmillan palliative care nurses for a day. They help terminally ill people and their families or carers cope with the diagnosis and support them so they can continue with their normal activities.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
