Story

Now the Great Salford Swim, see below (dont worry it will be even colder in Salford Quay!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately it has been necessary to postpone the British Gas Great North Swim, which was due to be staged on Saturday and Sunday September 4th and 5th at Windermere. This is due to prevalence of blue-green algae and the impact that this may have on your safety in the water.

This decision was taken by the Event Safety Group in the interests of safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed.

We are looking at a potential new 2010 date for the Great North Swim and will let you know by email on or before Tuesday 7th September. In this email we will also provide further details about the options that will be available to you, which will include: full refund of entry fee, taking part on a new date in 2010 should we be able to announce one, or deferring your entry to 2011.

We realize that the postponement will affect many people, but the safety of all swimmers has to be our number one priority at all times.

Thank you for your co-operation and understanding

Great North Swim team.

I decided back in 2009 to enter the Great North Swim.  The Challenge is to complete a one mile open water swim in Windermere, Cumbria.

To prepare for the big event I've been training in the pool three times a week trying to rack up at least 2km each time, so far so good.

I thought that all this effort should be used to generate some funds for a worthy cause, so the first one that came to mind was Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital NHS Trust.

It’s a local Orthopaedic hospital in Oswestry, Shropshire that mainly treats disorders of the bones, joints and muscles.

They have a centre for children and provide specialist surgery and treatment for children and adolescents with orthopaedic or disorders affecting muscular development.

The Alice Ward is where we spent several months with our daughter while she recovered from surgery on her hip (now totally fit and well thanks to all the people that work there).

The hospital is amazing in how they help support the patients and relatives through traumatic times and provides a truly world class level of care.

Please dig deep for this charity and the fact I will be dipping my toe into one of the largest and coldest lakes in the UK.

In June I'll be completing my first open water swim as part of the "Tri Hard 3" relay team, put together for the Shropshire Triathlon, so I'll post a few action shots, if the swans don't get me.
