Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for the Wessex Neurological Centre Trust.

The plan is to set off from Land's End on 9th May and take 15 days to do the 1050 mile trip.  The shortest day is around 45 miles and the longest day is over 100 miles. Ouch.

If you would like to sponsor me - or even join me to cycle any of the days! then that would be great.  I've tried the ride before and failed miserably (a combinatin of wobbly knees and bumping into some friends in a pub...) so I need all the incentives I can possibly get this time.  I've even booked a non-changeable train ticket home from John O'Groats to make sure that I don't dawdle.

The Wessex Neurological Centre does great work to provide a dedicated, integrated, 24hour acute neurosurgical and neurological assessment, investigation and treatment service.  Those of you who knew Bill Winnicott may know that Bill was taken to the unit after his illness and received excellent care there.

Thank you very much for visiting this page and thanks very much for any sponsorship that you can give.  I hope I wont let you down!

You can find more details of the route that I'm planning to take, including maps, dates and downloads (if you're thinking of joining me), at https://sites.google.com/site/robspillard/

About the charity

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke.
