Story
This page was originally set up in January 2020 as Jess trained to run the London Marathon with the Hinckley Running Club place. Although this wasn't a charity entry, she chose, after some research and consideration, to support Cure Leukaemia.
Here is the story of how Burbage Charity Bikes began.
As the COVID-19 pandemic sent the UK into lockdown and all group sporting activities were cancelled or postponed including the London Marathon, the Daly family set about raising money to top up Jess' London Marathon Just Giving page and enabling the local community to get out and about on their bikes. This was the start of what became Burbage Charity Bikes.
Burbage Charity Bikes is a project where every single bike has been donated to us by someone who has heard about us. Every bike is cleaned, serviced or repaired and then sold with 100% of the money going straight to Cure Leukaemia.
When Burbage Charity Bikes started in April 2020, none of us anticipated being where we are today. So far we have sold over 2500 bikes, raised over £164,000, run the London Marathon and won awards for what we thought was a lockdown project. All of this has been possible due to amazing support in so many ways from the local and now far wider community.
In June 2022 and 2023, the Burbage Charity Bikes team joined 150 Cure Leukaemia cyclists and rode 500km from London to Paris in four days.
Cure Leukaemia is a national charity based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. They help blood cancer patients to access pioneering drug and transplant treatments by funding a network of specialist research nurses across the UK. Without these nurses, to ensure patients are monitored and cared for, clinical trials of these new treatments would not run and patients, that have exhausted standard treatment options, would miss out on potentially lifesaving therapies. Every penny raised for Cure Leukaemia helps save lives and also hastens global progress towards the eradication of all forms of blood cancer.
You don't need to buy a bike to donate to the cause. Every donation helps to push towards a cure.
