At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.

Story

I'm raising money to help the Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella organisation of 13 humanitarian aid agencies who are coordinating relief efforts for the Haiti diasaster.

Having watched the terrible scenes from Haiti, I wanted to do something to help raise money. The kids in my form at school (12 years old an mostly attached to a PS3 or Xbox in their spare time) have committed to raising money by running a mile each on the treadmill, and I said that I would match them mile for mile to try to motivate them, never thinking for a second that all of them would sign up.

All of them did, and now I'm sitting here looking down the business end of a 31 mile run on a treadmill.

I genuinely don't know whether I'll be able to complete this - as well as being a bit overawed by the distance, I haven't run further than 6 miles since August and I'm a stone heavier than I was then. But the disaster in Haiti is massive, and that calls for a massive effort to help to raise money.
