There are few challenges that can stand the test of time. With science and technology many great challenges are not undertaken on the same basis as the original pioneers who first dreamed them possible. Not so Swimming the English Channel. When Captain Matthew Webb swam the Channel in 1875 he had one costume, hat, goggles and grease. For the crossing to be recognised officially today the same restrictions apply.
Facts about the Challenge:
· The shortest swim distance across is 21 miles but due to tidal changes swimmers cover over 30 miles
· Weather conditions can change rapidly from flat seas to gale force winds with waves up to 3 metres high
· Water temperatures ranging from 15C to 18C
· Swims often need to place in the dark (due to tidal times)
· Additional obstacles include sewage, sea weed and jelly fish
· The English channel is the busiest shipping lane in the world with 600 ships and 80 ferries using the Dover Straights every day
· Known as "The Everest of open water swimming" is considered by many to be the ultimate long distance challenge.
· (and for all those not interested in the history lessons or the big sell – It’s the strip of water that divides civilisation from France and it's cold!)
In July SEA6 ,a team of six friends who have known each other for many years, will attempt to swim this stretch of water as a relay team .In doing so they hope to raise funds for Sparks. (Sparks is the children’s medical research charity who fund research across the whole spectrum of paediatric medicine)
This is a major challenge for the six lads and we hope you will support this great challenge and this great cause by choosing to sponsor.
We appreciate your support.
