On 24th August I will be riding my bike from my home in Essex, to my office (near Heathrow) and back again. It's a round trip of 100 miles.
I'm doing this to raise money for Re~Cycle, a charity that makes a huge difference to people in Africa by providing them with a cheap, sustainable mode of transport and the skills to keep it going.
Each 50 mile leg of my journey will take me about 4 hours, which as long as the average African spends walking EACH DAY. By providing bikes to people in remote communities, Re~Cycle helps children to attend school, medical workers to reach more people, goods to be carried more easily and lots more besides.
It costs £5,000 pounds to send a shipping container full of 500 old bikes, tools and spare parts to Africa.
My target is to raise enough money to cover the cost of one shipping container. My employer will match any sponsorship up to £2,500 which means that every £10 raised here will effectively pay for 2 bikes to be sent to Africa, making a huge difference to the lives of a surprising number of people.
If you're interested in cycling to work on 24th August for Re~Cycle, drop me a line and I'll set up a team so that we can track our combined efforts!
