Story
The mission of Secondary1st is to help fund research into the prevention, diagnosis and causes of secondary breast cancer and the development of more effective treatments.
Secondary (metastatic) breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream, lymph system or body cavities and form new tumours. These tumours are composed of breast cancer cells.
Secondary breast cancer, can in some cases, be treated but it cannot yet be cured. About 35,000 people in the UK are currently living with secondary breast cancer. Most are women but men can also develop the disease.
11,500 people die each year in the UK, which is 1 person every 45
minutes. 35% of people with primary breast cancer will develop secondary breast cancer within the first decade of the initial diagnosis.
My husband and I are supporting this charity on behalf of my sister, Mary. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 which has now spread to her bones and liver. She continues to try all treatments and drugs available, in her fight to live and see her three boys, ages 12, 15 and 18, grow up. Mary is 51.
We are going to shave our heads, to raise awareness and funds to support this Charity. I will also be donating my locks to the Little Princess Trust who use the hair to make wigs for young cancer sufferers.
