I have decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this year. Crazy maybe, but let me tell you why...

One of the leading causes of blindness in the world today is the lack of spectacles.

670 million people - 10% of the world's population - are disadvantaged by poor vision and a lack of glasses. Vision Aid Overseas is an international charity dedicated to transforming access to eyecare services in developing countries.

For 25 years we have been helping some of the poorest people in the world gain better sight. Whether it be a teacher in Ghana, a seamstress in Zambia, or a school pupil in India, deteriorating sight can have a devastating impact on people's lives and livelihoods.

And what Vision Aid Overseas and its professional volunteers have shown is that something as simple as a pair of glasses with the correct prescription can turn such potential despair into hope. Eyecare services are beyond the reach of most people in the developing world. At Vision Aid Overseas we believe that everyone has a right to an eye test, and if needed, glasses to help correct poor sight.

Being an optometrist myself, I see first hand how much a simple pair of glasses can change somebody's life. We in the UK, are priviledged enough to walk into a shop and buy them off the shelf. Most people in the world dont have that priviledge, and this is where Vision Aid Overseas comes in. They go out to these countries, test peoples eyes and give them glasses. Its an awesome charity and does some fantastic work.
