Story

Yes, we did it and with no volcanic ash cloud to contend with this time, We have finally completed our Peru Trek in aid of the MS Trust. I would like to thank all of those that have supported us and donated to the MS Trust, your kind donations have helped to raise nearly £7,000 to much needed research into a disease with no cure.

Just a few stats from the trip:

·         5 days of trekking

·         42 hours of trekking time

·         Climbed peaks of 4200m and 4600m

·         No blisters

·         Numerous insect bites

·         Highs of 20C

·         Lows of minus -10C (approx)

·         Daily effects from altitude sickness

·         5 Celebrities ( kept bumping into Denise Van Outen, Fearn Cotton, Alexandra Burke, Amanda Byram and Gabriella Cilmi)

·         Hot flushes from drinking coca tea!

Thankyou to all those that have donated and continue to donate.

Lots of Love Nic and Shaun

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page where hopefully you will be kind enough to donate towards the MS Trust.

In September 2010, we completed a 5-day intensive trek in Peru for the MS Trust. From high remote mountain trails to traditional Andean villages and Incan ruins, this was a challenging trek of up10 hours walking per day on steep trails climbing to 4600m in fantastic and diverse mountainous country.

Our trek took us into the Lares region of the Peruvian Andes, passing green valleys, tranquil mountain lakes and high passes. We passed through small village communities that offerered a fascinating insight to traditional Andean life. Finally we made our way to Aguas Calientes and continued on to Machu Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas.

No, its wasn't a jolly, before you say it! Although we did have great fun. We have already paid for our own tour costs but we are hoping to raise £6500 for a charity that funds practical research into the development of new drugs which will hopefully lead to a potential cure for this debilitating disease.

The cause is dear to both our hearts - knowing how helpless you feel knowing someone with the disease other than being supportive, and the difficulty in coping emotionally as someone with the disease.  We hope that by doing this trek and raising vital funding for the MS Trust we will help the many thousands of sufferers.

If you are unsure what Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is please see below:

  • More than 85,000 people in the UK have multiple sclerosis. A study in 2009 suggested it may be about 100,000
  • Recent studies suggest about three times as many women as men have MS
  • Multiple sclerosis is not inherited, but family members do have a slightly higher risk of developing MS
  • It is usually diagnosed when people are in their 20s and 30s
  • MS is a disease affecting the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord)
  • Symptoms can come and go and can vary greatly in terms of severity
  • There may be periods of relapse of varying length and severity
  • Everyone's MS is different
  • MS is not a fatal condition
  • It is neither infectious nor contagious
  • Most people diagnosed with MS will not need to use a wheelchair on a regular basis
  • At present, there is no cure for MS but this certainly doesn't mean that the symptoms of MS cannot be treated

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Thanks
