Story

Motivated by the passing of my dear friend, Martin and inspired by the example set by my good pal, Lyle, I will run 5km every day in August. It’s a small gesture but it’ll hurt, and get harder.

*UPDATE: I'm running 5km daily, 1-15 August and cycling 38km daily, 16-31 August.

I’m 38, out of shape and several [tens of] kilograms heavier than my best. Those pretentious pseudo-intellectual craft ales, delicious moreish salt & vinegar peanuts, and my toddler's leftovers have come home to roost, all over my Dad-bod.

Life is short. Health isn’t guaranteed. And so I’m running to remember and change things. But I’d also like to raise awareness and support for a charitable cause. Aberlour - Scotland's Children's Charity do incredible work, supporting vulnerable kids and families across the country. I’ve worked with their staff and projects, enabling fostering, befriending, mentoring and early intervention. They’re a real positive force. If we want to live in a kinder, more compassionate place, it’s charities like Aberlour – with our support – that’ll help shape it.

I’ve also created a Spotify playlist, unoriginally named 'DAVE'S 5K A DAY' which you can visit here:

At time of writing, it’s empty. I won’t add songs to it but if you’d like to put some motivational music in there for me, please do. Otherwise, it’ll just be silence I hear, and a crushing internal monologue.

And if you'd like to join me for one of my runs - friend or stranger - I'd love to have you along. I'll be starting early every day, in Cambuslang mostly and in East Lothian occasionally. Let me know if you'd like to run beside me. NO TALKING!

I'll post daily updates below.

About the charity

1 in 4 children are living in poverty in Scotland. That isn’t right. Not all children are born with an equal chance. We know that by working together we will beat poverty and discrimination. With your help, we will reach more children and their families earlier, before it’s too late.
