Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We recently said farewell to our Mom Sheila. She had been an avid supporter of the small but important charity Asbestos Support Central England. We lost our Dad Jimmy in 2014 to Mesothelioma - the cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Jimmy had worked in the 1970’s in repairing and modernising council properties that had been built pre and post-war. Unknowingly then, the dust from the asbestos, that at one time had been seen as an asset in construction, that he was removing was already causing the damage that would some 50 years later take his life in a painful and distressing way. Asbestos damage  lays dormant in the lungs and is undetectable. Many people will have worked in places such as schools and offices that we would consider safe places, and have already and unknowingly been exposed to asbestos which may sadly be the cause of their eventual death.

Seen as a condition that hopefully may diminish over time, as asbestos is no longer used in this way - it has to be disposed off professionally as hazardous waste -  there is less focus on this disease compared with other cancers. So any funds to help support sufferers and their families is welcomed, but raising awareness is also a very important part of what the charity can do.

Information on the work done by the charity, and how to find out important details about mesothelioma can be found on the ASCE website http://asbestossupportce.org
