Place2Be is a small but really important charity. It provides counselling services for children within their schools, and tries to help children deal with emotional and behavioural problems.

Of course the hope is that by dealing with these issues at a young age they can reduce the risk of much bigger problems later in life.....A staggering 80% of children showing behavioural problems at the age of five go on to develop more serious forms of anti-social behaviour, and over 90% of young offenders have had a mental health problem as a child^†. That's why effective early intervention is so important - and why The Place2Be exists.

I have visited 2 of the schools and seen the work Place2Be does; these schools are just around the corner from where we all live; the kids are just like ours except many are dealing with issues that no child should have to. Place2Be does an amazing job in trying to help.

Monique's Story

Three Year 6 girls came to a Place2Talk session. One girl, Monique, talked about the first anniversary of her cousin's death by shooting, which fell on the same day as her own birthday party. It also coincided with a stabbing on her street the previous night.   Her two friends said they had to request police permission to cross the cordon in order to attend Monique's party and expressed how scary that was.

The three girls then expressed their fears about the forthcoming transition to secondary school and their anxieties about attending different secondary schools in September. Some time was spent in thinking about how to retain friendship networks outside of school, as well as acknowledging the connections they already had within the new schools.

At the end of the session one of the girls asked if she could make another appointment to talk about her parents who were separating.   She was anxious to know who was going to be there for her at home as well as at her new school.
