Three teams from St Andrews will be rowing their way to the Olympics, but without leaving the town, to raise funds for Get Kids Going and for St Andrew's extension!

They are taking part in the Olympic Rowing Challenge at St Andrew's School on May 16th, and aim to row 64,000m, the distance from Hitchin to the Olympic Stadium site in , . Teams of eight rowers will be competing in a fast-paced relay in a race to complete the distance in the shortest time, with schools from across Hitchin represented. 

St Andrew's primary school is entering three teams made up of parents and teachers.  Organiser Paul Henry, a parent governor of St Andrew's, said "We thought this would be a great way to raise the profile of sport in schools, and hopefully inspire our young athletes of the future. With the Olympic Games coming to our capital in just two years time, children can get a taste of the excitement and fun of a competitive sporting event, with the bonus of seeing their parents and teachers racing against each other! St Andrew's will be raising money for Get Kids Going, who provide equipment to disabled young sportsmen and money for St Andrew's school extension including a community room and much needed library."

 

The event takes the form of a very fast relay, with each team member rowing for just 20 seconds before making a speedy changeover with a team mate, in order to keep the momentum of the machine at optimum pace. The race will start at 10am and should take about four hours to complete, with the event open to the public from 12 to 3pm on Sunday 16th May.
