We tackle poverty with practical assistance to fight disadvantage

Story

Tower House is a Community Centre & Cafe based in the north of Brighton, which specialises in providing services for people over the age of 50 - both with our partner organisations and by providing our own SVP services.

We are part of the international charity 'The St Vincent de Paul Society' - known simply as the 'SVP'.  The SVP are a Christian charity whose aim is to support those in poverty of any kind.  We are open to anyone of any faith or none at all.

In the Brighton area, we support older people specifically - whereas we also host services for the homeless, ex-offenders, those in financial poverty and much more in our other centres in the UK.

We have many SVP charity shops in the UK, we also offer befriending to those in need through our SVP conference groups, who also provide furniture to those who have nothing - and our work extends beyond these examples.

At Tower House, we let the community in, and our cafe is open to anyone of any age, our facilities are for hire - both of which are priced affordably.

2024 sees us increase our services to local older people, providing new days of activity rich mornings and afternoons on Mondays and Thursdays,  all with a freshly prepared main meal in our dining room - and with minibus transport for those in our catchment area.   Wednesdays will see us supporting older men together - particularly those that have been widowed and who are alone.

Our guests can opt to attend for just a morning, a lunch, an afternoon or a whole day for a reasonable charge.  We will never turn anyone away in need.

Of course, our essential work comes at a cost - we have a beautiful Edwardian building to maintain, bills to pay like any other individual or organisation and a minibus to maintain.  Our services are professionally staffed to provide a robust and quality service to our guests - all of these things together come at a cost and our JustGiving page is part of our fundraising plan ongoing.

Please do support us if you can - every penny helps..

Here are some examples of what a donation could mean:

£1 would pay for a coffee/tea in our cafe for an older person to come in to warm up, receive a friendly welcome, and feel at home in a place where connections can be made, and isolation reduced.

£7 would provide a hot cooked 2 course meal for a guest increasing their nutritional intake, fluid intake and improving their health resilience, all with the social input of a group mealtime experience.

£17 would pay for an older member of the community to benefit from a whole day at the centre, alleviating loneliness and improving wellbeing, trying new things, feeling purposeful, engaging with new experiences and other older people.  Building on wellbeing through participating in a holistic range of activity options.

£50 would pay for a minibus outing for a group of older people to access local places like parks and green spaces, shopping experiences to preserve independence and feel linked to their community by attending local events.

£100 would pay for entertainers to perform at a fundraising event for the centre.  Helping us to provide a special day for our guests, for the community and give a fun party atmosphere that is often missing in an older person's life when families move away and friendship circles decline in older age.

Thank you.
