100 Hole Challenge in aid of the Sussex Cancer Fund

Story

.About 10 years ago, a small group of golfers from West Sussex Golf Club played 100 holes in a day to raise money for charity. Over the following 5 years, they increased the challenge so that in the last year, they played over 200 holes in a 24 hour period. This was to be their last hurrah. However, Russell Barton who came up with the initial idea and played in every challenge sadly passed away this year and another regular player, Patrick Curry succumbed to Covid. So, some of the original team decided to do it again and open it out to the broader membership of the club and play for the Barton Trophy. This year, fifty six golfers will attempt to play 100 holes of golf at the West Sussex Golf Club on Sunday 26th June in aid of two charities - Worthing Breast Cancer Trust and Breathe Arts Health Research - in support of Viv Crabb and Roger Curtis who are the Club Captains this year.

Our team of four consists of Alistair Mackenzie, Christian Hayward, Iain Ritchie and Tom Mackenzie and our chosen charity is the Worthing Breast Cancer Trust. Tom was involved before and he has teamed up with younger generations to drag him along.

All 14 groups will start at first light (4.15am) and play until we have completed 100 holes with the trophy being awarded to the winning team. This will be a tough assignment and your support through donations to our charity would be fantastic.

The Worthing Breast Cancer Trust is part of The Sussex Cancer Fund which was created in 1981 by consultant oncologists Dr Deutsch, Dr Hodson and Dr Murrell. Originally called the Sussex Cancer Treatment Fund, the charity progressed to include the funding and development of research programmes and later became known as the Sussex Cancer Fund for Treatment and Research. Now named the Sussex Cancer Fund, the goals of the fund are to work hand in hand with the NHS to give every cancer patient in Sussex the best available treatment and facilities.
