Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Our challenge has now been completed! On Sunday, our team completed the two days of extreme hiking in aid of Seafarers UK: in 25 hours we completed 24 peaks in the .  It took us 14 hours (start time 05:50 am) to complete 10 peaks over the distance of 18 miles on the first day and 11 hours (start time 05:10 am) to complete 14 peaks over the same distance on the second day.  Each peak was over 800m. As you can see from the attached photos, in addition to the physical challenge of ascent and descent we had to battle the continuous torrential rain, winds of speed 50 mph, with the wind factor driving the temperature down to 8C (British summer up North!).  Further, poor visibility (50m) made it a challenge to navigate and stay on the path which was obviously a success: we are all back.

We are very proud of this achievement.  We have finished as one team (some individual members of other teams abandoned their attempt to complete the challenge), with no casualties (a member of one team was airlifted).  About 25% of the participants did not finish the challenge.  After the event we were advised by the organisers that we had to endure the worst weather conditions in the history of 24 Peaks Challenge; whether this is true or not is immaterial to the achievement.

We are extremely grateful for your donations.  It helped us to persevere when the mind was refusing to accept other reasons for being on the mountains with horizontally falling rain due to the speed of the wind, having walked for 6 hours non-stop with another 8 hours to go to finish the day, when no wet gear could handle the rain and everything was soaking wet after the first two hours from shoes to the hood and the contents of the pockets of the coat and the rucksack; water was everywhere.

Our site will be open for donations for another month for those who have inadvertently missed the opportunity to give prior to the challenge.  We welcome donations of any sum.

You will know that Lloyd’s Register take ‘Life Matters’ concept very seriously in all aspects of our business as we help our marine clients improve their safety and reduce their environmental impact ... and going beyond this, we are working with Seafarers UK (www.seafarers-uk.org), a charity dedicated to supporting seafarers and their families from all sectors, through a major fundraising event - the 24 Peaks Challenge.  Lloyd's Register is active in supporting seafarers charities in the good work they do for the Marine community.   The Challenge involves climbing 24 peaks over 2,400ft in the within 24 hours.  Teams from all over the marine industry will be taking part over the weekend 17/18 July - owners, insurers, brokers, flag states, etc.  Of course some of us from Lloyd's Register will be taking the event as a personal challenge to 'do something that matters' and we, The Salty Dogs, are one of those!  I really hope that you can help us with this - not by climbing the mountains with us, but by kindly supporting our fundraising efforts with a sponsorship donation.
