Story

34 months ago, During summer of 2010 i began having serious back pain whilst in Turkey. At the time I and my parents put the pain down to sleeping on a uncomfy bed for two weeks, at the time i simply shrugged it off and dealt with it.
Unfortunately it wasnt simply just a different bed, by the time we had got home after the flight it was a lot worse, I was in a lot of pain.
I woke up in the middle of the night unable to move. Mine and im sure everyone else's worst nightmare. The emergency doctor was called out and put the pain down to muscle damage. It was quite obvious by morning that this wasnt simply a "bad back"

By morning i had started to regain feeling in my upper body and with help from my parents and a mountain walking stick i managed to move around a bit, but the pain was far to much. I passed out during the day and it became quite obvious that i needed more help than first thought.

I spent a total of two weeks in York Hospital (And another week later on in the year) they tried numerous tests and techniques to try and work out what was wrong but nothing showed up and no conclusions were made.

So at the start at what should have been my First Gcse year(Year 10) i was on crutches and only just as I was simply too stubborn to resign myself to a wheelchair.

I spent the next year or so struggling along, i got back on my feet a few times but never for more than a couple of weeks. Numerous treatments and test were carried out but i always seemed to be taking one step forward and two steps back. Everything seemed to be going downhill. I had to complete my Gcse's at home as it wasnt possible for me to attend.

We tried everything, Remedial-therapy, Physio-therapy,Hydro-therapy, cortisone injections, tablets and Two hospitals but nothing seemed to help that much and no-one could work out what was wrong. The more time that went by the more and more i began to feel alone, i lost all trace of confidence and self belief.

But after my back going seriously downhill and spending a long time in a wheelchair and on crutches i was reffered to Sheffield Hospital and they were unbeliavably helpful! I was given new tablets and was told to try acupuncture.

All i can say is that it worked!! With help from the pain team and doctors at Sheffield Hospital and Phil from Selby acupuncture clinic my back began to improve! With extra help with coping strategys from the Physchologist i began to improve in leaps and bounds!
Also one last thing that i never thought would help but certainly has is my LifeStrength band!

Now i am returning to college after getting ok grades at Gcse, i have joined Selby Cycling Club (Best club in UK IMO) I have lost weight my back is still improving and i am finally getting back to normal.

I have been given a lot of help and it has taken a very long time, But now i feel it is my turn to give something back so this is why i am going to put myself through a day of pain (Not my back though) with 500 other people on a One day coast to coast ride organised by Opencycling. This routes goes from Seascale to Whitby climbing a total of 4500 metres ( approx. one half of Mt. Everest)

Please donate and help Sheffields Childrens Hospital carry on with their amazing work!
