Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our Just Giving page. We have entered the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run for 2016 in aid of Guide Dogs.

The Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run is a fantastic event, its gruelling and tiring, but also great fun. The idea behind the event being to drive 2000 miles continually from Enfield to John O'Groats to Land's End to Knebworth, Hertfordshire.

This will be Tim's tenth attempt at the event, eight of the previous nine having being successful. Darren is a novice as having never taken part before, however, his ability behind the wheel will hold him in good stead and they both expect to complete the event!

We will be using Tim's 1970 Triumph GT6 mk2, a car that he has owned for 33 years, it being a trusted old machine that has been continually used for that period.

The 2016 RBRR will be the 25th in the series that started in 1966, it was then run in 1969, 1971, and 1974, then being run every two years. 1973 was missed out owing to the fuel crisis of that year.It is considered to be one of the longest standing one make car events held in the world and has earned plaudits throughout the old car motoring world. Interesting fact , when first run in 1966, the cars were all new vehicles, now the minimum age is 31 years!

Since 1990 the event has had a charitable basis and has raised over £510,000.00 for various UK charities, last time in 2014 the event raised £59,500.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support. For this time, Club Triumph wishes to raise a sum of over £60.000, however it would be great to raise £90,000.00 and therefore push the grand total of raising over £600.000! Please support Guide Dogs by making a pledge using Just Giving. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate, saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

The event is to be held over 48 hours from 7th October to 9th October 2016. To successfully complete the event, one leaves Crews Hill, near Enfield and then must visit 17 or so pre-arranged Control Stops to arrive at Knebworth for 19.00hrs on the Sunday evening. To drive the 2000 miles in 48 hours no overnight stops are taken, therefore it will be necessary for each driver to share the driving between them, so whilst one is driving, the other(s) are sleeping in the passenger seat. There are two breakfast stops built into the event, these being at John O'Groats and Land's End. Vehicles that can be used are the Standard-Triumph motor cars that were produced up until 1984. At present time, 150no of these old cars with crews of 2 to 4 persons are due to take part. Please note that all costs for the event, such as vehicle preparation and fuel costs are borne by the members of each team. Most of these cars will do 25 - 30 mpg, so fuel costs will be around £300.00.

Tim is the main organiser of this event, he works with a team of five other Club Triumph members to put the event on. All six of them are taking part in the event. It takes over a year of part time work to organise the event, its great fun to organise!

Its a weird event, to drive 2000 miles in 48 hours does not seem that much fun, but its the camaraderie amongst the teams, the cars (what cars they are), the roads, the scenery and pure sense of achievement on completion that makes the event so addictive and appealing. The 2016 RBRR was announced on the 5th November 2015 and by the 12th had over 100no entrants, massive take up of places for what is an extraordinary event.

Tim has unfinished business this time as last time in 2014 he did not complete the event, breaking down on the A1(m) near Doncaster and having to be recovered home.

Wish us luck!

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
