In December last
year my sister Sali celebrated her 50th birthday. Instead of presents, she
asked for money to be raised for Home from Home, a charity she supports as a
result of being introduced to it by her partner Malcolm. I had hoped that she was joking and, in time, would forget about it, but no. So my contribution is to run/limp in the BUPA 10,000 in London on May 31st. To achieve this I have been TRAINING IN A
GYM. I know the words training and gym in a message from me will come as a huge
shock to many of you but it's true. I have been going 3 or 4 times a week since
the beginning of January and can now push the doors open without help. After
that, all I need to do is make sure that a first aider is on hand, the defibrillator is
fully charged and the snack machine is working. Sorted!
Home from Home is
a charity that provides care for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children in
small family homes in their own communities. Their vision is to build a network
of these homes, and for each one to provide a family structure for the children
in its care. Each home has no more than six children who are cared for by a
House Mother. Home from Home now has 17 homes, with more opening soon and it
would be wonderful to help them in their endeavours - so over to
you!
I will also
mention that I was born with talipes, a condition that affects the muscles in
the feet and, if it wasn't for the pioneering surgery of Mr Apley back in the
1960s, I doubt that I would have been able to take part in events like this. So
this is also a thank you to him.
