Tom and Lucie are aiming to complete the Walk to Cure Diabetes in Greenwich Park on October 11th this year. Its a 5 mile route, and all funds raised will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation (JDRF).
Tom is 4 and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just 18 months old. He enjoys life like any normal 4 year old boy (in fact he appears to enjoy it more than most normal 4 year old boys!) but his daily routine is punctuated by the constant need to administer insulin and manage his blood sugar levels. He has an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor which he must wear all day, every day, for the rest of his life. These keep him alive, but he still faces the risk as he gets older of serious complications such as blindness, heart disease, kidney failure and circulatory problems. Thats why he, and 250,000 other type 1 diabetics in the UK, and desperate for a cure for diabetes.
The JDRF exists to find the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications, and is the world's largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. It was founded by a small group of parents of children with type 1 diabetes who recognised that insulin injections are not the cure for this life threatening and lifelong condition. To date it has has raised over £600m, all of which is used to drive world-class research to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its serious and debilitating complications.
