My story

The Orpheus Centre

"...a residential performing arts centre for young disabled people, generally with physical and/or sensory impairments. We don't set out to train our apprentices to be actors, singers or musicians. We use their enthusiasm for the performing arts to teach skills for living and improve self-knowledge, self-confidence and teamwork. Since we started ten years ago many young people have completed their apprenticeships and left us to go to college, live in their own flats and generally live life with a level of independence that they, their parents and social workers say would have been unthinkable without their years at Orpheus."

We are at it again - testing our bodies and our friendships on another mad cycle challenge.

You may remember that we crossed from Whitehaven to Tynemouth last year following the Wainwright route from Coast to Coast, carrying our tents on our backs and meeting monsterous Mountains on the way.  Despite knowing we had pushed ourselves to the limit we have decided to go through it all over again. This year we have less mountains, but more hills and many more miles!

The route will start at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich and take us south and east through East Grinstead, to Eastbourne and then finally to the halfway mark of Hastings Castle. From Hastings Castle we travel along the coast to Shoreham-by-sea and then up to Guildford before veering west to the finishing line at Farnham Castle for a well deserved pint of real ale.

We are not super human athletes. In fact I would go as far to say that most of us are broken in one way or another. Like the last time though we will rely very much on pride, bloody-mindedness and a little piece of madness for good measure.  We have no support cars and in truth, if reviewed by a bookmaker we would be deemed as having very little hope of succeeding....

...but I like the odds being against us. We intent to give it our very best and if the insanity can raise even a little for our a fantastic cause - The Orpheus Centre - then every ounce of pain will be worth it. So if you feel you can spare a few coins for the centre, we sincerely thank you.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
