Story

NOMINATIONS FOR BEST TRIMMED BUSH SOUGHT
#TRIM YOUR BUSH CAMPAIGN SUPPORTED BY PORTERS ESTATE AGENCY
- Do you know a hedge hero? -

The #TrimYourBush campaign, was started by Tooting residents Kirsten Botting and Crawford Anderson when they heard of an older neighbours’ fall whilst avoiding overhanging shrubbery.

Kirsten and Crawford encouraged residents to take care of their front gardens and ‘trim your bush’ so that our pavements are walkable for everyone – the elderly, those with sight impairments, those who use mobility scooters and parents with buggies.

The campaign captured the publics’ attention, so the duo has teamed up with Porters Estate Agency (Porters) to launch the #TrimYourBush awards for the best trimmed bushes in Wandsworth.

Commenting on the campaign, Sean Porter of Porters, said: “This is such a fun campaign and people have been tending to their front gardens in response. As an estate agent, it is important for front gardens to make an impression, and an unsightly hedge can be off putting. We are delighted to take part in the awards and offer T-shirts and tote bags with the #I’veTrimmedMyBush! slogan on them.”

If you or your neighbours have a neatly trimmed hedge or you know of someone who is a ‘hedge hero’, please email us at tyb@wandsworthconservatives.co.uk with the address, a photo and a short explanation of why it should be considered for an award. Closing date for entries is 21 March 2022.

Thanks to the great support we have had from our ‘poster boy’ Jurgen Donaldson aka the_blind_foodie we will be raffling five T- shirts for The Vision Foundation. “For a tenner you have the chance to win a highly desirable, limited edition #IveTrimmedMyBush T-shirt.” “This campaign has really captured the imagination of the community and it’s making our streets safer for many people like me “ added Jurgen.

“The response has been fantastic,” added Kirsten Botting, “We have heard of neighbours helping out neighbours, of garden maintenance businesses started on the back of the campaign. We have seen two-tone hedges, neatly clipped yews, as well as a singing Pyracantha which is home to a host of sparrows. But we would like the public to nominate their favourite hedges, and stories about how the campaign has got them into action.”

Further information:
Wandsworth Council is aware that overhanging plants are a problem and can cut back your hedges and charge residents for obstructing movement. However, it prefers not to be so draconian, and for residents to take responsibility and do it themselves.

Check the hedges first to ensure that there are no nesting birds, the nesting season can be from February to August. If all is clear, get your shears out.

If you cannot compost or take your garden waste to the tip, Wandsworth Council will take away your cuttings – just pop them into a bin bag (you are allowed up to five black bin bags) and they will be collected on your normal refuse collection day. All Wandsworth rubbish is then sent to be incinerated to make energy.
