We provide a home and feeding programme to nurture AIDS orphans in Utange, Kenya.

Story

On Wednesday 10th March, the Head Boy of Bedford School, Joe Dorgham, and the Head of the Charities Committee, Anthony Scott, will cycle 150km (93.2miles) from the Kenyan Embassy in London to Bedford School. The Head Master of Bedford School, John Moule, will be joining them cycling the last 45km.

The event will raise money for two charities.

The first is The Utange Orphanage Project, Kenya - The Sure Foundation Registered Charity no. 1061603. The project was founded 2 years ago by Deborah Scott (my mother) and aims to feed, clothe, offer shelter, and educate AIDS orphans in the village of Utange in order to give them hope and a future. “Casuarina House”, the orphanage, was opened in January 2009 with the first 10 orphans moving in. Phase two completed the build in early January this year offering shelter to a further 10 children.

The home provides a loving, caring and nurturing environment for the orphans. The project needs to raise £18,000 every year to sustain “Casuarina House”. The next stage is to buy farming land to plant crops in order to help the home become self sufficient. Bedford boys are planning to go out in July this year to volunteer, fence and prepare the land and plant crops.

BBC 3 Counties Radio will be broadcasting live from the official opening in Utange on 29th January. Radio Presenter Lorna Milton will be cycling the last 45km with the Head Master of Bedford School. Lorna has a seperate Just Giving page for sponsorship and it will be linked to this page soon.

The second charity we are supporting is Sue Ryder Care (1052076). Sue Ryder Care - St John's Hospice is situated in the Bedfordshire countryside and has 15 inpatient beds. The hospice offers specialist short-term palliative care for patients with life-limiting illnesses including Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, heart, liver and lung failure.

An active day treatment centre offers a variety of treatments including blood transfusions, complex drug treatments and outpatient specialist palliative care consultant appointments. A specialist Lymphoedema Service provides complex Lymphoedema treatment to both inpatient and outpatients as well as home visits.

The hospice staff are supported by volunteers providing additional bereavement and chaplaincy services. The bereavement service co-ordinator and volunteer offer a mix of telephone, face to face meetings and group support.

The money will be split between these two charities. Two thirds of the donations will go to the Utange Orphanage Project, and the remaining one third will go to Sue Ryder Care.

Please dig deep and donate now.

Anthony & Joe
